Martin Keown has heaped praise on Eddie Nketiah after the Arsenal striker’s brace in Wednesday night’s 4-2 victory over London rivals Chelsea.
The Gunners earned a vital three points at Stamford Bridge to boost their hopes of landing a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta’s side had lost their previous three games going into the clash against the Blues, but prevailed in a chaotic match.
Nketiah was starting in the Premier League for just the second time this season, and justified his selection with two vital goals.
‘I thought he was magnificent today,’ Gunners legend Keown told Stadium Astro of Nketiah.
‘I know that the second one was perhaps given to him on a plate, the first one, you’ve got to be there to capitalise. He looked sharp, he dealt with the ball well. And those youngsters at Arsenal keep producing.’
Mikel Arteta admitted after the match that he has been ‘unfair’ with the striker regarding his playing time this campaign.
The 22-year-old’s contract is due to expire in the summer, with no new deal agreed as of yet, but Keown feels there’s ‘no way’ the Gunners academy graduate will depart.
‘There’s no way that he’s leaving, surely, after that kind of performance,’ Keown added.
‘He’s been extremely patient, he went out on loan to Leeds.
‘It was interesting when [Marcelo] Bielsa was talking about how much he didn’t want him to go, we kind of took a bit of notice of that because he has a big reputation.
‘He’s come back, the manager explained he’s not been fair, and that’s very honest.
‘Look at his performance tonight when he got his chance, boy did he take it. And in a very big arena here.. He would’ve dreamt of doing this.’
